Regulatory Guidelines For Beauty & Cosmetic Product Labels

cosmetic product labels

A beauty product can be made out of the best-quality ingredients to enhance your skin or hair, but, if its packaging is dull and unattractive, customers may not desire to buy the product. A boring or featureless cosmetic product label cannot convince today’s customers who demand superior quality product plus packaging. Aesthetics plays a vital role when investing in product labels.

Handy tips while designing and ordering custom cosmetic product labels:

Adhering to the FDA Regulations

A label design that negates FDA rules involving cosmetic product label guidelines will not serve any purpose. Such cosmetic packaging can be subject to stringent action from the FDA authorities if it lacks all the necessary information or is misleading in some way. Cosmetic product packaging and labels in India have to comply with certain rules that are overseen by the state FDA. Labels must have the correct information, including the product’s name, batch number, ingredients, PAO, and so on.

This will primarily apply to all products like lotions, skin creams, nail polishes, eye creams, shampoos, perfumes, deodorants, and more. Any kind of material used as a cosmetic product will have to pass the FDA regulations. Some cosmetic products that double up as therapeutic drugs like fluoride toothpaste, sunscreens, deodorants, and moisturizers must follow the regulatory standards set for cosmetics products as well as medical drugs. They may need additional requirements such as compliance with specific manufacturing practices and annual FDA-advised registration.

Cosmetic Product Label FDA Guidelines

Inner & Outer Product Label Declarations:

  • Legal manufacturer name
  • Cosmetic name
  • Expiry date (use before date)
  • Manufacturing unit address
  • Components list (more than 1% concentration)
  • List of components having a concentration of less than 1%.

Inner cosmetic label declaration (with any potential health risks)

  • Proper directions to use the product
  • Accurate warnings, words of caution, or any specific directions
  • Proper names of ingredients along with their limited quantities (more quantities may be hazardous).

Outer cosmetic label declarations

For more than 1 product that is packaged, product numbers have to be declared or mentioned.

The net contents, and their weight as per solids, liquids, and semi-liquids also have to be mentioned correctly. Similarly, the manufacturing license number and batch code have to be declared either in the inner or outer labels.

Newer Labeling Guidelines Under Indian Cosmetic Rules 2020

The new rules have provided some relief for small-sized cosmetic products, they are as follows:

  • Under new rules, batch code is not required to be mentioned for small-sized cosmetics (up to 10 gms for semi-solid and solid products, up to 25 ml for liquid products).
  • For all cosmetic products having less than 60 ml liquid or 20 gms of semi-solid/solids, the ingredients list is not necessary to be mentioned.
  • The manufacturer’s address can be written in short for all cosmetic product labels that have 60 ml liquid or so gms of semi-solid/solids.
  • For cosmetics such as perfumes that contain less than 60 ml liquid or 30 gms of semi-solid/solid, there is no need to declare the net contents.

Label Manufacturers Can Consider New Improvised Techniques & Printing Materials

One can get inspired by modern printing techniques for labels and packaging of beauty and cosmetic products. Such value-added digital technology can provide great style variations and functional qualities to cosmetic product labels.

Let us see some classy examples:

Durable Finish – For cosmetic products potentially exposed to fluctuating temperatures like rainy weather or humid conditions, label integrity can be maintained only by giving it the right finish. Techniques that include UV varnish, ultra gloss, or lamination can protect cosmetic product labels from tearing, getting smudged, or fading.

Double-Sided Labeling – If you are packaging by using a clear container, the double-sided labels can look appealing and attract the customer’s attention. It can also be a good way to use the available space to your advantage. Labels that can be read from inside the container can alter the look and class of your packaging.

Hot Foil Stamping – The technique of hot foil stamping can add a touch of sophistication and trendy style to your cosmetic product label. You can use a traditional gold or silver hot foil stamping method or try other options, like a flashy holographic sheen label or a matte blue stamp, which can look unique and fashionable.

Embossing – The label embossing method adds three-dimensional glamor and look to your cosmetic product label. The letters or designs are raised to give them a three-dimensional appearance, adding special charm to the beauty product labels.

Waterproof Labels – If the cosmetic product has to be associated with a water element, label producers can consider using waterproof labels so that the labels do not fall off even after the consumers start using the product.

Custom Tags – If you want extra label space, you can use custom hang tags. These will provide you additional space to include information about the brands, any promotional deals, or other key details that cannot fit on the product surface.

FAQs

Why choose the best-quality adhesive for your cosmetic product labels?

You can design a superior and elegant label for your products, but without a good adhesive, the label won’t remain attached to the product’s surface and may come off at any time. Many beauty or cosmetic products such as lotions or body scrubs are handled and used by the buyers in showers or bathrooms.

This leaves them highly exposed to moisture and hot humid environments. Without a good and strong adhesive, these labels won’t stand a chance and may fall off completely. The product label’s integrity may be compromised if the label producer does not use a good adhesive that will last in humid and high-moisture conditions.
